Welcome to Eureka, California.

Eureka is the county seat of Humboldt County, California, USA. The population was 26,128 at the 2000 census. Eureka was founded in 1856, and soon became an important port city for northern California's logging and commercial fishing industries.

If you have taken a better photo of Eureka. Please email us a copy and if we like it, we might use it. The magnificent Carson Mansion on 2nd and M Streets, is perhaps the most spectacular Victorian in the nation. The home was built between 1884-1886 by renowned 19th Century architects Newsom and Newsom for lumber baron William M. Carson.

Because of its proximity to Redwood National Park and Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Eureka is a popular tourist stop with many restaurants and motels. Of particular interest in Eureka are its harbor; historic Old Town, with its ornate, Victorian-style architecture; and the Humboldt Botanical Garden.

Eureka is the midpoint stop in the three-day-long kinetic sculpture race, a zany, 42-mile-long race of artistic, human powered machines that must prove themselves able to traverse mud, water, sand, gravel, and pavement.

Because of its northern isolation, much of the post-war redevelopment and urban renewal that other cities experienced bypassed Eureka. As a result, Eureka is resplendent with examples of 19th and early 20th century architecture and historic districts.

The Humboldt Botanical Garden was first organized in 1991. Its Native Garden will have an emphasis on the Humboldt region, but will include plants in the geographic area from the Rogue River to the north shore of San Francisco Bay, and inland to a north-south line running from Vacaville through Williams, Redding, Yreka, Medford, and along the Rogue River to its mouth. The Garden is particularly interested in maintaining complete native conifer, Iris and Lilium occidentale (western lily) collections.

The Sequoia Park Zoo is located in Eureka, California, USA and is operated by the City of Eureka. It is a small admission-free zoo whose mission is to inspire wonder, understanding and respect for the natural world by providing fun, rewarding, educational experiences that encourage meaningful connections between animals, humans, and our environment.
